Dear Respected Members of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society,
Introduction of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society The Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society was founded in 1987 by neurosurgeons interested in spine and spinal cord diseases. Thereafter it has been the leading force in the care of patients with spine and spinal cord diseases. It has been working as a core in clinical research and basic research of spine and spinal cord in Korea for more than 30 years.
Early before 1960s when Department of Neurosurgery began to be established officially separate from Department of Surgery, our pioneer neurosurgeons contributed to spine and spinal cord diseases. For example, they practiced surgeries for herniated intervertebral discs, spinal cord injuries and spinal cord tumors.
Under these traditions in minds, the spinal neurosurgery research society has tried to facilitate research and to improve quality of care for spine and spinal cord affections. We have developed and refined the treatment for cervical spine affections, such as ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament, which is rather common in Korea. Also neurosurgeons popularized the use of microscope for various spinal affections, which ushered in less invasive approaches for various spinal diseases, including endoscope spinal surgery. For spinal cord diseases, the society has led improvement of the treatment on tumors, vascular diseases and syringomyelia.
To address the growing demands of spinal surgeries in Korean society, it was renamed to the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society in 1999 and installed various research sub-societies within the Society. We founded Korean Minimal Invasive Spinal Surgery Research Society in 2002 and Korea Cervical Spine Research Society in 2007. To cope with spinal deformity and osteoporosis that are increasing among the aged people, we installed Korea Spinal Deformity Research Society in 2009 and Korea Spinal Osteoporosis Research Society in 2014 for the development of those areas. In line with recent increase of cancer patients, we installed Korea Spinal Tumor Research Society in 2014 to prepare coordinated treatment between various specialists for spine and spinal cord tumor patients.
Since its inception, the Society has made efforts to train well-qualified spinal neurosurgeons to meet increasing demand from Korean society. We have developed surgeons exchange and visit programs, and nurturing programs for the next generation surgeons. We have devoted ourselves to meet societal needs with optimal quality of care for spinal affections.
Our society expects that research and development for spine related areas will provide impetus for the growth of related industries, which would lead better quality of care with less cost. For this purpose, we founded the Korea Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society in 2010.
Also our society bore in mind that the international collaboration would be critical in aspects of standardizing the quality of care and research. Therefore we led the initiative to establish Asia Spine in 2010, and Asia Pacific Cervical Spine Society in 2007.
Since its foundation, the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society has made every effort to help patients with various spinal affections in Korean society. Now we will prepare upcoming future while reflecting the activities of the last 30 years. We will do our best to increase communication with the Korean society, and to be the most reliable stakeholder for spinal health in the upcoming future.
